Jiwoo Hong

Hi, I'm Jiwoo — an incoming M.S. student in the School of Electrical Engineering at KAIST (starting September 2026), where I'll be joining the VIA (Vertically Integrated Architecture) Research Group, advised by Prof. Minsoo Rhu.

I recently graduated from Yonsei University with a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics, and spent a semester as an exchange student at UC Berkeley. I've worked as a research intern at the Yonsei Scalable System Software Lab with Prof. Jinkyu Jeong.

Research

I'm broadly interested in systems that stay fast and reliable at scale — the layer where hardware, infrastructure, and machine learning workloads meet. Some of what I've been working on:

  • Storage & Database Systems: How can storage engines be made faster and more resource-efficient without sacrificing reliability, especially as workloads and data scale up?
  • Cloud-Native Infrastructure: What does it take to design microservices and deployment pipelines that stay simple to operate even as systems grow more distributed?
  • Applied ML Systems: How do real-world constraints — latency, memory, data pipelines — shape what's actually achievable in speech, recommendation, and generative systems?
